Grief & Loss

Serene Ocean Sunset

Working through unresolved grief and loss with clients often begins by creating a space where the full range of emotions can be acknowledged without judgment. Grief is not limited to death; it can emerge after the end of a relationship, the loss of a role or identity, or significant life transitions. Many clients carry unprocessed feelings—sadness, anger, guilt, longing—that have been pushed aside in order to function. Therapy invites clients to slow down and gently explore these emotions, helping them name what has been lost and recognize how the loss continues to shape their thoughts, behaviors, and relationships.

An important part of the process is helping clients understand that grief does not follow a linear timeline. People may move back and forth between acceptance, pain, relief, and confusion, especially when the loss involves complicated relationships or sudden life changes. By normalizing these experiences and validating the client’s emotional responses, therapists can reduce shame and self-criticism. Interventions might include reflective dialogue, narrative work, memory processing, or rituals that allow the client to honor what was meaningful while also acknowledging the reality of the loss.

Ultimately, the goal of grief work is not to “get over” the loss but to integrate it into the client’s life story in a way that allows continued growth. Clients can learn to hold both the memory of what was lost and the possibility of new meaning, connection, and identity. As unresolved grief is processed, many individuals begin to experience greater emotional flexibility, a deeper understanding of themselves, and the capacity to move forward while still honoring the significance of what they have lost.
